BitStone Empowers ExhibitManager with AI-Powered Legal Research
ExhibitManager is a software company providing solutions for litigators and arbitration practitioners, streamlining the process of writing extensive submissions with multiple exhibits.
The Challenge
Managing large legal submissions with numerous exhibits can be a time-consuming and tedious process. Manually searching through hundreds of documents to find specific details and assembling relevant exhibits is inefficient and prone to errors. ExhibitManager aimed to develop a solution for legal professionals to simplify and accelerate these processes while reducing the risk of errors.
A critical aspect of the project was ensuring the confidentiality of legal documents. Given the sensitive nature of the information, it was imperative that these documents be securely stored within the intranet, preventing unauthorized access from external sources. The AI needed to be capable of interrogating these documents from the intranet, while offline, to maintain security and ensure that sensitive data remained protected.
Integrating AI into the solution posed a unique challenge, particularly in preventing AI hallucinations—instances where AI generates inaccurate or misleading information when it cannot find clear answers. This was a critical concern, as legal professionals rely on precise and accurate data. To address this, the development team focused on implementing advanced AI algorithms and rigorous testing protocols to avoid the risk of false responses.
The Solution
BitStone employed a cross-functional agile team of 2-3 members to develop this solution together with the ExhibitManager stakeholders and created a custom software solution that integrated seamlessly with their existing platform. This team consisted of a developer with expertise in Visual Basic and building user interfaces, a backend developer skilled in building and maintaining the REST API, and a data scientist and machine learning engineer responsible for the AI-powered NLP capabilities.
This agile approach allowed for iterative development, rapid prototyping, and continuous feedback from ExhibitManager throughout the development process, ensuring the final product met their specific needs.
